Will The Social Network get an Oscar?

According to most critics the answer is YES.

No one can know for sure if a movie will have an oscar before it actually gets it, however you can make a educated guess if you take a look at the top movie list from influencial film critics association. And this year most pointed towards one direction: David Fincher's Social Network.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association named The Social Network as best picture, also awarding the film honors for best screenplay, director and music (the latter two awards were a tie). The New York Film Critics Online gave The Social Network prizes for best picture, director and screenplay.

The Boston Society of Film Critics was also on board, giving Fincher’s movie awards for best film, direction, screenplay, score, and actor (Jesse Eisenberg). And finally, the American Film Institute placed it among the top 10 movies of the year

Happy Thanksgiving of the day / Updated

Long story short, Australian broadcast journalist James West claims he has been inadvertantly CC’d on a series of e-mails forwarded among the Tran family of West Palm Beach, which lay out their annual Thanksgiving plans.

Apparently this has been going on for three years now, and this time around West decided to track down the Trans, and hopefully get an invite to their delicious-sounding Thanksgiving dinner. He started a vlog series to chronicle his efforts, which you can watch on YouTube.

A few hours ago, News.com.au reported that West’s attempts to contact the Trans have succeeded, and the much-coveted invite was promptly extended. He will leave Sydney tonight on a personally-funded 26-hour flight to Florida, where he will be greeted by a local TV station and a bunch of complete strangers he’s been Internet-eavesdropping on for nearly half a decade. Happy holidays!

The wolves Hoax

Remember that video that was all over the web a couple weeks ago with the Russian cop pulling over a car, then jumping into said car for protection when a pack of wild wolves seemingly comes out of nowhere? Turns out it was part of an ad for Eristoff Vodka and we’ve all been had. So that’s fun.

Internet Live update

This morning I came accross this impressive and quite scary tool. US consumers were pinching pennies during the recession, but their spending on virtual goods through Faceboook and iPhone Apps is still booming at an impressive rate. If you have an idea of social gaming hit me up :-)

"Living statistics – Many of us who have been following social media since the early 90s are very sensitive to today’s exponential growth in usage of the sharing web. Inspired by other cool real time counters, Social Media Industry Head, Laurel Papworth, my own Rise & Rise of Social Media presentations and various ‘cool’ videos (you know the ones) I decided to put together this little Flash (which is in constant development) showing how active & dynamic the Social Web, Mobile Industry and Game Business is. More after the embed."

Future looks bright

Seeing a need and the pressure to provide an unlimited energy source in remote areas without having to build a 60meters supporting structure, Fred Ferguson created the MARS (Maggen Air Rotor System) Turbine, which is essentially a tethered, floating wind turbine.

From Cool Hunting:

"Essentially a blimp covered in fins, Ferguson’s turbine flies 1,000 feet high, connecting to the ground with a tether that doubles as an energy conductor.

Like conventional wind turbines, MARS uses magnetic induction to produce energy, but the difference comes with increased altitude. Catching wind 800 feet higher than its traditional counterparts, there’s much less resistance and greater wind speed, ultimately allowing the MARS access to a superior crop of wind. Another advantage, the turbine can produce energy in winds as low as seven mph and as high as 63 mph whereas contemporary turbines shut down around 35 mph and with little or no wind, they become useless."

It will be commercially available early 2011. A more compact version is also being developed.

The future of Energy looks bright again, it will be a kite festival everyday :)

However after some minutes of celebration, Sarah Murdoch is told on her earpiece that she did a massive FAIL. The winner wasn't theKelsey Martinovich, but the brunette Amanda Ware! After a short moment of confusion, the host feeling lonely and apologising massively announces the real winner.

Fox8, generous, decided to give a nice check to Kelsey as well as a nice trip to New York.

Youtube instant

Released last September 10th youtube Instant is a real time search engine built by a Stanford Student Feross Aboukhadijeh. This awesome search engine allow its user to search through youtube as they type. For the funny trivia Feross got an instant job offer by Youtube CEO Chad Hurley via twitter.

The project started off as a bet with his college roommate. Said Aboukhadijeh, "It started out as a bet with my roommate, Jake Becker. I bet him I could build real-time YouTube search in less than an hour."Aboukhadijeh lost the bet, for it took him three hours to complete the site, and another couple hours to polish it. Aboukhadijeh said he found it "surprisingly easy to build".

Man sells GT500 raffle ticket, watches buyer win car moments later

One of said ticket holders was approached by another attendee a few minutes before the car drawing. For $200, he handed over his raffle ticket. It probably seemed like a great deal at the time. After all, it's easy money, and it's not as if he stood a chance of actually winning, right? Minutes later, the seller watched as the ticket he pawned off turned into a brand new Shelby GT500. But hey, at least he got a couple hundred bucks out of the deal - along with a story to tell and a heap of regrets. Bonus: everything is on video, including the fateful transaction. Follow the jump to see how it all unfolded

Simon For Digital Activation Manager

With this Post I am applying for the position of Digital Activation Manager Benelux.

At the beginning social media was considered by many a fade. However I believe social media is a logical extension of what we’ve been doing for many years. The technology and the medium might have changed, but the drive of connecting, learning, sharing, expressing and interacting has not. Only a few brands have understood that from the beginning, Coca-Cola being one of them.

Since a very long time I have been passionate on how social media have brought back humanity in all digital life. I have learned a simple but too often forgotten thing, fish where the fish are. Today our fish swim in a digital world, write about how they feel, say what they like or hate and most importantly they want our attention. After almost two years working for Coke I grew interest on how such a great brand have come closer and closer to its consumers treating them like “close friends”.

Fish where the fish are ... and be the first one to fish ...

I started my career in advertising where I learned a lot about the digital world, viral campaigns, communication mixes and tight deadlines. The way of working in an agency the task at hand and culture differed greatly from Coke’s system. I grew with the digital world, I am fascinated by viral trends, buzz and today alltop.com, mashable.com, buzzfeed.com, viralvideocharts.com, thedailywh.at, viralblog.com ... have no secret for me.

My passion for digital is backed up by my 2 years experience as a marketer, during which I have delivered results (Nestea volume +11% after introducing for the first time the brand in the Belgian grocery market, managed the Experiential programs of Minute Maid and Aquarius ...) I used my knowledge gained in advertising to build a strong working style that has helped me in gaining trust of my Management and assume responsibilities for my brands, as well as managing my relationship with agencies.

My colleagues would describe me as:

Embracing the changes to come has brought me development opportunities in the past and I am confident it will be the case again this time.

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” W. Churchill

I believe the position of Digital Activation Manager BeNeLux will do so by meeting my short term career expectations: take in more responsibilities and increase my weight in the decision making process. I will bring my zeal, fresh vision, passion and experience to complete the necessary toolkit that is needed to tame a media that is due to be incontrovertible. At the same time, this role will allow me to sharpen my knowledge on the Coke Franchise and be part of the team that will deliver the 2020 Vision.

I am looking forward to be invited to the interview to further convince you of why I am the perfect choice for the job and go over my motivation.

Sincerely Yours,

Simon Rakosi

Doctor Invents Anti-Rape Condom that “Bear Traps” The Penis

(CNN) -- South African Dr. Sonnet Ehlers was on call one night four decades ago when a devastated rape victim walked in. Her eyes were lifeless; she was like a breathing corpse.
"She looked at me and said, 'If only I had teeth down there,'" recalled Ehlers, who was a 20-year-old medical researcher at the time. "I promised her I'd do something to help people like her one day."
Forty years later, Rape-aXe was born.

Vintage Advertising Posters Discovered in London Underground Subway Station

What is it with London and their forgotten posters? Reno work at the Notting Hill Gate Tube station uncovered these mid-1950s posters in an abandoned hallway leading to the old elevator shafts (which were replaced with escalators in 1956-59). The vivid colors and sharp graphics contrasted with the grit and grime make this even more of a delightful find.
For more images, click here. Note from photographer Mike Ashworth: “We will be leaving these intact – and please do not pester the station staff as the posters are wholly inaccessible – which is why they’ve probably survived 50 odd years!”

5 People Who Exploited the Web to Get Hired

More than ever internet became a medium of communication, to get in touch with friends, apply for schools, post videos, update a blog and thus why not openly apply for a job.
Here are 5 people that made their way to a job using internet to get a job.

1. Eugene Hsu

In a world where drab, formulaic, cookie-cutter resumes are de rigueur, Eugene Hsu wanted to stand out in a big way. So the MIT Ph.D candidate put his drawing and coding skills to use creating an online resume using mainly Microsoft Paint.

The result? A fun, whimsical, almost silly version of a traditional CV. Hsu worked in animation research and used his technological and artistic skills to basically lobby the future for a job. Despite some critics who felt it was absurd and inappropriate, it worked for Hsu and he’s now gainfully employed.

2. Jon Barker
Jon Barker loved Gmail but was frustrated he could only view his mail online. So, he wrote a little program called Pop goes the Gmail that enabled him to download his email to his
desktop. It worked really well and fit Jon’s needs perfectly. There was only one problem—Barker had hacked into the then-new Gmail, a highly guarded pet-project that Google had opened to only a select few users, and had gone against Gmail’s terms of service. When the first email arrived from Google Vice-President, Barker expected to be slapped with a lawsuit. Instead, it was Google offering him a job.

3. Alec Brownstein
Alec Brownstein had a humdrum job as an average copywriter at a large international average agency—a cog in the giant wheel who dreamed of working at a more creative agency where he could make a real impact. While Googling some of his favorite creative directors, he came up with a brilliant, self-marketing campaign. After noticing there were no sponsored links attached to their names, he purchased ads from Google AdWords. Then he designed a personalized ad for each executive with a link back to Brownstein’s own site. Whenever anyone Googled one of the five names, his ad would pop up as the top result. He was counting on them doing what we all do from time to time: Googling ourselves. And guess what? That’s exactly what happened. Within a couple of months, Brownstein was interviewed by all but one. Two of the four offered him a job. The total cost of the entire campaign at 15 cents a clink—a mere $6 to make a dream come true. Check out the video he made about it below:

4. Simone Brunozzi
Disenchanted with his position as a system administrator for the University for Foreigners in Perugia, Italy, Simone Brunozzi looked for an escape in the virtual world of Second Life. He had planned to visit the virtual job fair in Luxembourg in order to write a post for his Second Life blog. As good fortuna would have it, Amazon.com was one of the prospective employers. Bruzonni had dreamed of working for a company like Amazon since he had studied abroad in California. Through his avatar, he visited the Amazon representative. An unassuming visit to a virtual world landed him a dream job as a Web Services Evangelist. Bruzonni credits his computer expertise and professional avatar with sealing the deal.

5. Renee Libby
Like many others, Renee Libby found herself without a job when the economy tanked. Her first line of defense? She jumped on her computer and began tweeting. Using Twitter, she began to follow other PR executives in the Baltimore area where she lived. She also committed herself to tweeting every hour or so about news specific to the PR industry in Baltimore. The more execs she followed, the more she was followed back. It wasn’t long before the director of public relations for Baltimore-based SPIN contacted Libby and suggested she start freelancing for the company, which not only soon turned into a full-time position, but one that paid even more than the job she lost before she got on Twitter! You can follow Renee on Twitter here.

Would You Intervene?

In the Netherlands violence against Public Service employees are increasing, and people remain inactive bystanders because they do not know how to react.

To confront the people with their inactivity they have posted 2 interactive Billboards (In Rotterdam and Amsterdam), with one live cam filming the street and a montage with a scene shot on blue key.

This campaign really shows that the possibilities available to advertisers are endless.

If she uses one of the those word you know it isn't going to be ok

1) Fine This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

2) Five Minutes If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

3) Nothing This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

4) Go Ahead This is a dare, not permission. Don’t Do It!

5) Loud Sigh This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiotand wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)

6) That’s Okay This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That’s okay means she wants to think long and hard beforedeciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

7) Thanks A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you’re welcome. (I want to add in a clause here – This is true, unless she says ‘Thanks a lot’ – that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say ‘you’re welcome’ . that will bring on a ‘whatever’).

8 ) Whatever Is a woman’s way of saying F– YOU!

9) Don’t worry about it, I got it Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. Thiswill later result in a man asking ‘What’s wrong?’ For the woman’s response refer to #3

Anyone else feel this way about movies lately?

Think outside the box

No more parking? Be creative ... there is always a solution ...

The Real Spider Man

I am sure we all wondered one day how great it would be to have super power and once we grow older we just fantasize for just a millisecond, because we know that being stung by a spider, fall into nuclear waste, ... would never give us any powers besides endless pain or hitch.

Than there are those other heroes, those eternal kids that will do anything to shine: The sporters that take sports outside the room, the fields or the tracks. Some time ago a new sport was born: ParKour. This sport was amazingly entertaining, people taking risk to an other level. We love to see them fail and think my god what a douche ... But sometimes some of them a just mind blowing, this is the case of Damien Walters: ex English trampoline Superstar, he converted to urban sports.

Here is a short video on what he is capable of doing ... Enjoy

(personally I would love to be a mind controller).

Finally

It took me some time to decide wether or not I would start a blog.

For me there was no point in hell to start writing a blog if nobody would read me.
Then during an interview for an interactive marketer position the guy in front of me told me:
"Why don't you write a blog for yourself and then maybe some people will stumble upon it and start to follow you ..."

So dear readers, although I know there is absolutely no one reading me, I'll do my best to update that page at least weekly. Here you'll find thingd I appreciate, caught my attention, disgusts me, seduced me or plain gibberish on subjects that are going trhough my head.

Have a nice surf!

To go with my first post here is the first video:

"How it would be, if a house was dreaming"
